I first fell in love with dogs while volunteering as a dog walker at our local animal shelter. I earned my certification in Dog Training from ABC Animal Behavior College where I graduated with honors in 2016. 15 years later, I continue to devote my spare time to homeless animals in need, including pioneering a volunteer dog training program at our humane society called Dog Club.
My training style can be described as a little bit of everything! I am trained in a variety of techniques and I prefer not to limit my training programs to just one method when each dog and owner are individuals with unique needs. I evaluate every dog and use the techniques and equipment that are best suited to their personality and the goals we are working towards.
I prefer not to label myself as any one “type” of dog trainer. There are so many methodologies these days, and these labels (“force free”, “balanced”, etc) mean different things to different people. The closest methodology/training philosophy to my training style would probably be LIMA, which stands for Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive. LIMA dog training is a training philosophy and methodology that focuses on using positive reinforcement techniques to teach dogs desired behaviors. It prioritizes using the least intrusive techniques appropriate for the given dog. If punishment is used, it must be the mildest effective intervention. LIMA recognizes that every dog is unique, with different temperaments, personalities, and learning styles. It tailors the training methods to suit each dog’s specific needs and preferences, ensuring effective and personalized instruction.
My personal philosophy is that there is a dog and a context for nearly every tool and training method available to us. There are very few training tools I will refuse to use in my practice. I believe in a ‘happy medium’ approach to dog training- not leaning to either extreme in methodology. I value ethical, science-based approaches. Not trendy gimmicks.
My favorite thing about being a dog trainer is helping owners learn how to provide the very best life they can through wholistic training. I treat every dog as though they were my own personal pet. I absolutely love my job and consider it an honor to help your dog be the very best they can be!
